Misplaced Trust - (Woodwind Quintet)

Program Notes:

Human relationships grow and fade, and trust is created and broken. The opening themes in this piece represent the growing trust between individuals. As the harmonies and rhythms begin to widen and move more quickly, it suggests that the trust is growing, but also, it becomes more strained. When the piece reaches the climax, the trust has been broken, and the music immediately after portrays feelings of loneliness and separation. Those themes continue but begin to get buried under some of the original themes as new trust is being formed. The piece ends with copies of the themes from the beginning marking a new start with another. The ending does not tell us how this new relationship will end but leaves it hanging on a chord that does not quite feel conclusive.
